So you’re interested in a camera system for your business . . .
There are many different variables to consider:
Locations – Inside, outside?
Purpose – Are these cameras in place to deter theft? Monitor a parking lot? Watch a production line?

Analog or IP?
That may sound like another language but for the most part, the difference boils down to how a video signal is delivered.
Basically, Analog cameras turn video footage into a format that is received by your recording device (DVR) and displayed on a monitor or television. IP cameras send their footage over cable or wireless and the footage is decoded by a network device. Essentially, IP cameras run on a network and the system is more like an extension of your IT infrastructure while an Analog camera system is a separate type of technology.
This may sound confusing but at the end of the day both systems can get the job done.
As always, our goal is to take the complication out of technology and provide our customers with a solution that simply works.
That being said, here are some simple pros and cons for both systems that should help you figure out which is right for you.
Analog Camera System
- Budget Friendly – an analog system is often the less expensive option.
- Variety & Custom Design Options – Analog systems tend to be easier to customize. With a large variety of camera styles and functions, these systems answer your unique needs and if you believe that your job requires some specific or unusual surveillance components, analog may be your best option.
- Dependable Technology – analog systems have been around a very long time and as such, have many software and hardware compatibilities. If you want a camera system that can integrate well with other technologies, it is important to look into compatibility before choosing anything.
- Security risks – these days we have to consider cyber security and while the probability of this happening remains low, the analog signals cannot be encrypted which means that someone else could get their hands on our signal.
- Certain features missing – While most anything you are looking to do are possible on analog systems, there are limitations. Digital zoom is one example. For images that you will need to zoom a lot and maintain clear images, analog may not be your best option.
Image quality limits – One of the most well-known drawbacks of digital systems is that the image quality is not always as clear as the IP alternative. If a crystal clear image is something you are after, it is best to consider all variables, desired zoom, PTZ requirements, face recognition, lighting etc.
IP Camera System
- Less signal interference/higher security – As this is a different type of signal run on a network, there is less likelihood for signal interference. Also, these systems are able to encrypt and further secure data. This means higher security and less risk of intrusion into your security system.
- More remote access possibilities – it should be stated that today’s analog systems have remote access capabilities and software but IP systems have a large array of options for remote viewing. PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet, all are places you can review your footage.
- Wireless options – because these systems can use your existing infrastructure, they don’t always need heavy wiring and can often take advantage of wireless technology. This gives you more flexibility for system design at times.
- Higher costs – IP cameras can run a large range of prices. It isn’t abnormal to pay a thousand or even several thousand dollars for a single camera depending on the specifications. On top of this, if your network doesn’t have proper setup, you may need to invest to get things up to speed.
- Bandwidth requirements – as with anything on your network, you are adding demand to your bandwidth. With this in mind it is important to make sure that you don’t need to increase your service. Will adding the security system to your network slow things down in the office? Make sure to discuss this with your vendor and your service provider.
With the different options on the market for security cameras, it is important that you consider your unique needs and compare them to the camera system you choose. Don’t allow a vendor to push you any one way without exploring the different technologies and how they fit your business.
A vendor who can supply both IP and Analog systems is a great place to start.

First, let’s look at what Video Analytics Software is.
In a nutshell, video analytics software tracks video data recorded by cameras and enables automated monitoring of people, vehicles and objects within a camera’s view.
This is a powerful toll you can add to your integrated security arsenal. It transforms visuals collected by your camera system into influential data you can use to improve functionality at your building/facility.

Picture a manufacturing or distribution center with high volumes of product and a few key issues they need to address:

Honeywell cameras were installed at designated locations but to truly add value and solve the issues the management team faced, Honeywell’s video analytic software Active Alert® was also installed to begin tracking patterns and monitoring activity at the warehouse.
Within the first month, the Honeywell Active Alert® detects several trends in the facility. Once these trends were identified, management adjusted:
- Theft: Facility managers designated high volume/traffic areas for camera placement. After compiling data, the source of theft was identified as pallets leaving the facility via pickup trucks after hours. By setting alarms and configuring the analytics software, any time a pickup truck approached the docks after pickup/delivery hours, an alarm sounded. The trend was identified and the culprits were caught.
- Shipping & Receiving issues: the operations team decided on checkpoints and installed cameras along the routes into their shipping and receiving areas. After compiling data, it became clear that drivers weren’t taking the shortest routes in and out of the facility which led to backups and confusion. The operations team invested in signs to help drivers get in and out of the facility quicker and reduced waiting time and charges by over 40%.
- Liability: The warehouse management staff knew they had to address forklift incidents. Cameras were installed and new routes/directional guidelines were implemented for movement in the warehouse. Additionally, employees were fined or rewarded for their incident records. At first, drivers incurred fines but word spread and within the first 9 months of tracking movements, the facility was able to lower its insurance rates because they had documentation of decreased incident/injury rates.

There's a lot to like about the contents of Adobe's most recent "Patch Tuesday" update. It's well worth downloading and installing, even if you normally take a pass on all but the most critical updates.
Included in this release are security patches for 112 vulnerabilities across four different products, including:
- Flash Player
- Acrobat and Reader
- Experience Manager
- Adobe Connect

Updates For Flash Player
The security update includes patches for both desktops and browsers, including a patch for one critical issue (CVE-2018-5007).� This is a new, worrisome attack vector that exploits "type confusion", allowing an attacker to execute commands on a targeted system in the context of the current user.
The company also patched a second issue, rated as "Important," that would have allowed an attacker to access sensitive system information, but Adobe did not provide technical details about the flaw, for fear that hackers would attempt to find a way around the latest patch.
The flaw impacts Flash Player v. 220.127.116.11 and its earlier versions, and:
- Chrome OS
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft IE 11
- Microsoft Edge
Updates For Acrobat & Reader
Acrobat and Reader were the recipients of the majority of the patches in this cycle, seeing 104 flaws dealt with, and 51 of them rated critical.� These issues run the gamut of solving for critical heap overflows, use-after-free, type confusion, untrusted pointer dereference, and buffer error vulnerabilities. Many of these would have allowed hackers to execute commands in the context of the current user.
This update fixes errors in the following versions:
- Continuous Track - 2018.011.20040 and earlier
- Classic 2017 Track - 2017.011.30080 and earlier
- Classic 2015 Track - 2015.006.30418 and earlier
On both Microsoft Windows and macOS.
Updates For Experience Manager
The latest release addresses three Server-Side Request Forgery vulnerabilities in Experience Manager, which is the company's Enterprise CMS, versions 6.0 - 6.4, on all platforms.
Updates For Adobe Connect
Adobe has patched three security vulnerabilities here, two rated as important, and one rated as moderate, one of which is a privilege escalation issue caused by a library loading in an insecure manner.� This patch is valid for Adobe Connect v.9.7.5 and earlier, for all platforms.
The company recommends all administrators and end users install this most recent update as soon as possible.
