When we discuss security at your office and safety, often times that points to a discussion about professional access control, security camera systems, burglar alarms and integrated security solutions. But, your professional telephone system plays a very important role in the safety of your office and your employees. Accidents and incidents happen and one of the first things any person says or does in an emergency is call 9-1-1.
There are important functions and settings within your telephone system for emergencies and some of these settings are now mandated by federal law.
In February of 2018, President Donald Trump signed into law H.R. 582 (commonly referred to as Kari’s Law), which requires that all multi-line phone systems allow for a direct dial of 9-1-1.
This means that instead of dialing an 8 or a 9 first like your system may require for typical outbound calls, an employee or guest at your business must be able to pick up a phone, dial 9-1-1 and be connected.
Additionally, your phone system “must be configured to notify a designated central point of contact when someone initiates a call to 9-1-1 using the system”. So, your system must notify a specific person with the location of the call when a 9-1-1 call is made. This way your designated contact can communicate with emergency responders and let them know where help is needed at your building, campus or complex.
The law has certain implications for the VoIP market, as many cloud based or hosted VoIP phone systems haven’t been approved for 9-1-1 dialing to begin with because some VoIP solutions aren’t capable of alerting emergency dispatchers to the location of the caller.
Kari’s Law will make the sale, lease and/or installation of phone systems without required functionality illegal after February 16, 2020 so you can anticipate manufacturers and telecom professionals to adapt their solutions accordingly.
So . . . what does this mean for your business and your existing system?
What do you need to do to make sure you are compliant with Kari’s Law?
First, check with the company who services your system. Ask them if the solution at your business is configured to dial 9-1-1 without requiring a prefix.
Second, make sure that you have your system configured to alert a designated contact in the event of an emergency. It may make sense for that contact to be your reception staff but if that is not the case, be sure to discuss this internally and let your telecom vendor know who you’d like to be alerted. Then, make sure your system is configured to do so.
Additionally, this is a great opportunity to review your company emergency response protocols. Do all of your employees know what to do in the event of an emergency? A building evacuation? A lock down?

We regularly reach out to clients for feedback on our products and service. Over the twenty plus years we have been in business, at least one thing has remained constant. Phones are a necessity for every business and professional phone systems remain a mystery to most users. Just like the other technologies in your office, your phone system changes with time and modern phone systems have many new enhanced phone features. These phone features can improve productivity, improve accessibility and assist with client relations. There are many different enhanced features available to you. With this in mind, we are bringing you a three part series focusing on enhanced phone features for enhanced business.
4 Enhanced Phone Features You Didn’t Even Know You Needed
The first in our phone features list is Twinning. Twinning allows a primary extension and a secondary number (extension or external) to operate together as a single telephone. When a call presents to the primary phone the secondary will ring. If the primary telephone does not ring, for example in Do Not Disturb, the secondary phone will not ring. For example, imagine you have twinning set up for your mobile phone and your office phone. When a call comes through, both phones ring so you can receive calls whether you are in the office or on the road (of course, as mentioned, you may set your phones to Do Not Disturb because you are gone for the day, or in a meeting so you aren’t interrupted by phone calls 24/7).
This next phone feature is typically used in large spaces like workshops or warehouses where team supervisors may have a desk with a fixed phone but also have a wireless extension (e.g. DECT). When a call is made from either internally twinned phone, the call will appear to have come from the primary phone (when the secondary is an extension on the IP Office system). Other users of the system need not know that the supervisor has two different phones.
Mobile (external) Twinning
A typical use for Mobile Twinning would be for a salesperson or other employee who has a desk extension but is often out of the office. They can give out one phone number to clients, but it will ring their mobile/cell phone as well as the desk extension. External mobile devices can be set as twinning targets even if the primary telephone is logged out.
Mobile Call Control
This enhanced phone feature allows a user who has answered a twinned call on their mobile phone to use features they would normally only be able to access on their desktop phone (i.e. transfer calls, park calls, conference etc.) There is traditionally a sequence such as ** (star star) that the user must enter to engage this functionality.

Remember the Spectre and Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities discovered early last year?� Well, hold onto your hat, because they've got company.
Recently, researchers discovered a new class of side-channel vulnerabilities in Intel processors that impact every modern chipset the company makes, including those used in Apple devices.
The new vulnerabilities exploit weaknesses in something called 'speculative execution' which is a core design feature of modern processors. This feature allows them to speculatively execute instructions based on conditions the system has 'learned' are likely to be true.� If those assumptions are proved to be valid, then the execution continues.� If not, it is discarded. The net effect of this design is to increase overall system performance speed, but it also opens up the door for additional risk.
The researchers had this to say about their latest discoveries:
"The new vulnerabilities can be used by motivated hackers to lead privileged information data from an area of the memory that hardware safeguards deem off-limits.� It can be weaponized in highly targeted attacks that would normally require system-wide privileges or deep subversion of the operating system."
Collectively, these new vulnerabilities are being referred to as 'MDS speculative execution' flaws, and have been identified as follows:
- CVE-2019-11091 - Microarchitectural Data Sampling Uncacheable Memory (MDSUM), part of the RIDL class of attacks.
- CVE-2018-12127 - Microarchitectural Load Port Data Sampling (MLPDS), also part of the RIDL class of attacks.
- CVE-2018-12130 - Microarchitectural Fill Buffer Data Sampling (MFBDS), also called 'Zombieload' or RIDL (Rogue In-Flight Data Load).
- CVE-2018-12126 - Microarchitectural Store Buffer Data Sampling (MSBDS), also known as a Fallout
Of these, the ZombieLoad attacks seem to be the most worrisome of the lot. �They impact the largest number of chips, encompassing everything Intel has produced from 2011 onwards, but all of these are considered serious security flaws.� Worse, there are no fixes yet, and no word yet on when a fix might be forthcoming.
